One birth date is all it takes. You can read this without knowing anyone's birthday — or without having anyone in mind yet.

Affinity works without the other person's birth date. It runs the compatibility engine in reverse — trying every value the missing side could hold — and finds which type fits you best on each of the same four axes: day-master relationship, elemental supply, day-branch relationship, and the spouse position. It shows each axis on its own instead of adding them into one score, because in a real person the day master and the elements don't move independently, so stitching together the top result on every axis would describe someone who couldn't actually exist. The same reasoning is used by Saju compatibility.
